What to do
- Climb the Piedra del Peñol, a huge rock with a staircase built into a crack in its side. The view of the reservoir from the top is the reason most people make the trip.
- The town of Guatapé and its zócalos, the colorful relief panels along the lower part of the house fronts.
- Boat rides on the reservoir, with a stop over the spot where the old town of El Peñol was flooded.
- Water sports, docks and clubs along the shore.
- The malecón (waterfront promenade), which is packed in peak season and quiet on weekdays.
What they won't tell you
The reservoir is a reservoir, not a natural lake, and its level changes. In the dry season it can drop and leave the docks stranded on mud. A photo with the water lapping at the garden may have been taken in a different month. Ask about the current water level before paying for a "water view".
Second: the weather. Guatapé sits above 1,900 meters and is cold, especially at night and with the wind off the reservoir. If you are expecting a tierra caliente pool (the hot lowlands, where the pool is the point), you picked the wrong destination.
Third: Sunday. The road back to Medellín between 2 and 7 p.m. clogs up with everyone who went away for the weekend. Leaving early or staying until after 8 p.m. changes the trip.
