For a paisa, as people from Antioquia are called, tierra caliente (hot country) means the west. San Jerónimo, Sopetrán and Santa Fe de Antioquia form a corridor less than an hour from Medellín through the Túnel de Occidente, and together they have 148 fincas listed on Finkeros. A finca is a country house rented whole, usually with a pool, for a group or a family. The three towns look alike, but they are not good for the same things.
The three, compared
San Jerónimo. The closest to Medellín and the one with the highest weekend demand. Median of COP 1,000,000 per night across 70 listings. It fills up the most and commands the highest prices.
Sopetrán. A little farther on, with larger fincas and lower prices. Median of COP 750,000 across 20 listings. Good value per person for groups.

What to do beyond the pool
Santa Fe de Antioquia has its historic center and the Puente de Occidente, a 19th-century suspension bridge over the Cauca River that is still the area's landmark. During Semana Santa (Holy Week, the week before Easter) the town holds one of the best-known traditional celebrations in Antioquia.
In San Jerónimo and Sopetrán the plan is more about the finca, with water parks and swimming spots along the highway. Sopetrán is also known for its fruit orchards, and in season you can buy mango and mamoncillo (a small, tart green fruit) by the roadside at farm-gate prices.
Climate and seasons
All three are hot, at low altitudes above the Cauca River canyon. The driest periods are December to February and July and August. Those months are also the busiest, together with the Feria de las Flores, Medellín's flower festival in August.
What they won't tell you
The Túnel de Occidente is the only practical road from Medellín, and on Sunday afternoons it turns into a bottleneck. Heading back between 3 and 7 p.m. can double the travel time. Leaving after 8 p.m. is usually faster than leaving at 4.
Second: the toll and the tunnel add a fixed cost that people forget when comparing with a destination in eastern Antioquia such as Rionegro or Guatapé.
Third: at several fincas along the corridor, the pool is shared by two or three houses on the same lot. The photo doesn't say so. Ask directly.
