Melgar is about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Bogotá on the road through Fusagasugá. On an ordinary day the drive takes two and a half to three hours. On a puente festivo it can take twice as long, and the culprit is almost always the same stretch. A puente is a long weekend: Colombia moves most public holidays to the following Monday, so the country gets about 18 three-day weekends a year and everyone drives out of the cities at the same time.
What is the route?
In practice there is only one route: Bogotá's Autopista Sur, Soacha, Silvania, Fusagasugá and the descent through Boquerón down to Melgar. No real alternative saves time. Any detour through La Mesa ends up longer, because that road is for getting to Anapoima or Girardot, not Melgar.
From Melgar, Girardot is about 26 kilometers (16 miles) away, half an hour's drive. Many people book a finca in one town and spend the day in the other. A finca is a country house rented whole, usually with a pool, for a group or a family.
What time should you leave?
The three moments that ruin the trip are predictable:
- Friday between 3 and 8 p.m., when all of Bogotá heads out.
- Saturday of a long weekend between 5 and 10 a.m.
- The return on the holiday Monday between 2 and 8 p.m.
Leaving Bogotá before 5 a.m. or after 9 p.m. changes the trip completely. For the return, many regulars would rather drive back early Tuesday and lose a morning at the office than spend it on the road.
Bus or car?
Buses leave Terminal Salitre all day, with frequent departures. The real difference is not the time on the road but what happens afterwards: most fincas in Melgar are outside the town center, on the road to Icononzo or toward the river, and from there you need a taxi or a motorcycle taxi. If the group is bringing groceries for three days, the car pays for itself.
What they won't tell you
The descent from Boquerón to Melgar is where the route's accidents pile up. It is a long, winding downhill with heavy truck traffic. Riding the brakes overheats them, and that is behind many of the incidents that close the road and leave everyone stuck for two hours. Stay in a low gear and be patient.
A second thing to keep in mind: tolls. The route has toll booths in both directions, and in peak season they become the second bottleneck after Boquerón.
Third: Melgar is truly hot, averaging close to 28 °C (82 °F) at 323 meters above sea level. Arriving at noon with kids in a car without air conditioning is a plan nobody repeats.
